This documentation is for Insight for Jira Cloud only.

This chapter will demonstrate how to integrate Insight Cloud with Jira Cloud by adding asset type configurations and creating and configuring custom fields to display Insight objects.

Integrating Insight and Jira is different in Insight for Server than it is in Insight for Cloud. In Insight for Cloud, the custom fields that contain Insight information are mapped onto Insight using the Asset type configuration screen.

To successfully integrate Insight with Jira, you will need to sign in with Jira administrator and Insight Administrator permissions.

Adding an asset type configuration

First, add an asset type configuration for the custom field you are linking, and add an IQL query to restrict the scope of the results.

How to add an asset type configuration...

To add an asset type configuration, you must be logged in as a Jira Administrator, or as a user with Jira administrator privileges.
  1. Click the Insight icon in the Jira sidebar.
  2. Under Configuration, click Asset Type Configuration.
  3. Click Add asset type configuration.
  4. In the dialog box:
    1. Under Name, enter a name for the asset type as it appears in Jira. This will be the name of the Asset Type added to Jira.
    2. Under IQL, enter an IQL filter to use to synchronize objects into the Asset Type in Jira. Due to server executed IQL, no user functions like currentUser() etc are supported.
    3. Enable Assign assets if you want to automatically assign Insight assets to the user referenced by the object. Only assets that are assigned to a user (or unassigned assets) will appear in the Jira Service Desk portal. If the object has multiple user-type attributes, the first attribute is selected as the assignee.
    4. Enable Automatically synchronize Jira assets if changes are made in Insight to automatically synchronize these assets. If you decide not to automatically synchronize assets, you can manually synchronize them after any changes by clicking Asset Type Configuration > (your asset type configuration) >.

  5. Click Next.
  6. Review the information summary, and then click Save to save the asset type configuration.

When you create the new asset type configuration, you can select if you want to have it manually or automatically synchronized.

If you don't automatically synchronize your assets, you can manually synchronize them after any changes by clicking Asset Type Configuration > (your asset type configuration) >.

How to sync an asset type configuration...

If you deselect automatic synchronization for an asset type configuration, you must manually synchronize the asset type configurations so that changes to Insight or Jira are visible.

  1. Under Configuration, select Asset type configuration.
  2. Select an Asset type configuration and click  Sync all assets.
  3. Asset synchronization will take a little while, depending on the number of assets to be synchronized.

Adding a custom asset field in Jira

Then, create a custom field in Jira of type "Asset".

How to create a custom field in Jira...

To create a custom field in Jira, you must be logged in as a Jira Administrator, or as a user with Jira administrator privileges.
  1. Click the Jira Settings icon  in the sidebar.
  2. Click the Issues iconin the sidebar.
  3. Under Fields, click Custom fields.
  4. Click Add custom field, at top-right.
  5. In the dialog:
    1. Click Advanced in the left sidebar and select the Asset field type.
    2. Enter a Name for the new custom field (required).
    3. Enter a Description for the custom field.
    4. Click Create.
  6. To view or edit the custom field, it must be associated with one or more screens. Select screens to add the custom field to.
  7. Click Update.

Creating a type configuration filter

To ensure that a custom asset field only displays the appropriate objects from Insight, you must add a type configuration filter to the field.

How to configure a custom field in Jira...

To configure a custom asset field in Jira, you must be logged in as a Jira Administrator, or as a user with Jira administrator privileges.
  1. Click the Jira Settings icon  in the sidebar.
  2. Click the Issues iconin the sidebar.
  3. Under Fields, click Custom fields.
  4. Select the custom field to configure. Click the ellipses at right (...) and select Configure.
  5. Under Default Configuration Scheme for (custom field name), click Edit Filters.
  6. Click on the input box and select an asset type to filter on from the dropdown.
  7. Click Save, at bottom.

Specify Assets on issues

Classic Projects

Jira agent view (Jira native)

When you create or edit an issue in the agent view (Jira native), you should be able to specify any assets from the synchronized listing of Insight objects. Assets are not filtered by assigned assets. Users entering characters in an asset field needs to type at least two (2) characters for results to become visible.

Customer Portal in JSD

The Asset Field on the customer portal in JSD are filtered by the assigned assets (if specified) so only the assets connected to the logged in user or the unassigned assets are possible to select.

Next Gen Projects

Currently the Asset Field is only supported on the agent view (Jira native) and not on the customer portal. This means that the assigned asset option will not work on Next Gen Projects. Atlassian are working on this.
